On 14th April, 1917, the 1st Bedfordshire battalion of 15 Brigade, 5th Division left Villers-au-Bois and moved forward into close reserve in the Zouave Valley just south-west of Lens constructing a mule track from Tottenham Tunnel to Givenchy as did so they. Over the next two days they continued with their road-making task before moving into the front line on 17th April. On the next day Victor Clarke was killed, most likely by shell fire. |
